Burnie

BURNIE has a small but commercially vital port and its airport at Wynyard services regular interstate and island flights. It is a typical large town/small city but one with a fascinating history of industry and some terrific older style buildings of various architectural styles - well worth the stop if you have time to take a self-guided art deco tour or a visit to its many churches.

Today Burnie is actively promoting itself as a city that makes things such as handmade paper, cheese and whisky, and visiting some of these makers can be an absorbing experience.
