ATTRACTIONS
Hellyer Gorge
For access from Waratah, drive approximately 7 kms east to the Murchison Highway, turn left and continue a further 20 kms or so until you reach the Hellyer Gorge roadside picnic area on the right. Two short walks are accessible from the picnic area, a 10 minute loop track from the eastern side of the highway meanders down to the Hellyer River. From the Western side of the highway a 20-30 minute walk follows the river and returns to the road. Turn left and continue along the side of the road to return to the picnic area. Picnic tables and public toilets are available at the site.
Kenworthy’s Stamper Mill
This building houses working machinery used by a local, Dudley Kenworthy, who continued prospecting near Mount Bischoff mine after it closed in the 1940s. Visitors can view the stamper mill in operation as it has been restored to full working capacity.
Open daily 7.30am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday. 8am - 5pm Saturday and Sunday.

Tarkine Interpretation Centre and Gallery
Tarkine information, local touring brochures, maps and books are available.
Exhibitions of local significance are displayed in the Gallery.
Opening hours are from 10am - 2pm, Wednesdays to Sundays. The centre is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Access outside these opening hours may be arranged for groups or coach tours by contacting Waratah Council Office.

Philosopher Falls
For access, drive approximately 9 kms southwest of Waratah on the B23 road to Corinna. The track follows an historic mining water race before a steep descent to a viewing platform beside the falls. The walk takes approximately 1.5 hours return.
Waratah Museum and Gift Shop
Waratah’s historic former courthouse and council chambers now houses a collection of memorabilia and photographs of the town’s tin mining history.

Waratah Falls and Lake
The town of Waratah is built around the shoreline of Lake Waratah. It is pleasant central point in the town with picnic and barbecue facilities and walks to the falls (just north of Smith Street) and the dam wall near William Street.
Whyte Hill Lookout
For access, drive approximately 10 kms southwest of Waratah on the B23 road to Corinna.
The lookout features sweeping views over the Tarkine rainforest.
Waratah
WARATAH was established in 1871 when pioneer James 'Philosopher' Smith discovered the Mt Bischoff tin deposit. During the 1880s Mt Bischoff was reputed to be the world's richest tin mine. At the mine's peak, the population of Waratah swelled to over 5,000 people.

From Wynyard take the B26 to Yolla then A10 to Waratah.

Waratah to: Burnie - 65kms (1 hour), Cradle Mountain - 50km (45 min), Strahan - 115km (1 hour 30 min), Wynyard - 64km (1 hour 15 min).

Caravan park and camping ground, a hotel and guest houses. Advance bookings are strongly recommended all year. Reservations for the caravan park can be made through the Visitor Information Centre.
