Strahan

STRAHAN - jewel of the North West, capital of the wilderness. One of the big attractions at Strahan is the Gordon River which allows visitors to access the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Six-hour cruises in swift catamarans take visitors up the Gordon River, 40 kilometres away at the south end of the harbour that averages 30 metres deep and is twice the size of Sydney Harbour. See the ruins of Sarah Island and discover the history of the worst and most forgotten of Australia's penal colonies.

If you haven't time for a six-hour cruise, the skippers of charter yachts or fast boats can take you on a shorter trip. For those with even less time, you can fly over the Gordon in a seaplane. Strahan is also home to the famous West Coast Wilderness Railway, some excellent galleries and many activities including kayaking, fishing and four wheel drive tours.
