The Western Wilderness

With its rugged mountains, wild tannin-dark rivers, ancient forests and heath, the Tasmanian wilderness is a place of spectacular beauty, much of it so remote and inaccessible that few will ever enjoy its secrets. But others also have a chance to witness the wonders of pristine wildness by driving along the Lyell Highway, which traverses the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park for sixty or so kilometres between Derwent Bridge and Lake Burbury. Follow the Murchison Highway and the road eventually leads to Cradle Mountain, at the very heart of this extraordinary region. In a tapestry of jagged brown, shaded black, and occasional orange, a myriad tints of green thrill with dew-dressed brilliance or calm with endless variety. Elemental nature asserts itself as the air freshens, and the journey westward brings a growing sense of excitement and the prospect of the untamed.

Cradle Mountain Cradle Mountain

The famous craggy profile of Cradle Mountain is a Tasmanian icon and borders the spectacular World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park. Enjoy a walk around Dove Lake, exhilarating views from atop Cradle Mountain or experience a soothing spa treatment. Escape, rejuvenate and indulge at the multi award-winning Cradle Mountain Lodge, your luxury base camp for the Cradle Mountain experience. Spend two nights at Cradle Mountain Lodge with complimentary breakfast each morning.

Or maybe sit back and make yourself at home at Strahan Bungalows and enjoy all that Strahan has to offer. Lake St Claire Lake St Claire

There are some places which though they are in landscapes of exceptional loveliness, are more than just beautiful. They have a quality of significance too; their location is not arbitrary, but intended and satisfying. Lake St Clair is such a place. Trout fishing is popular in season with a permit, and a ferry runs the 13km to Narcissus Bay from near the visitor’s centre, with its restaurant and informative displays. Walks in this magnificent wilderness are also a great option with tracks to suit all ages and abilities. Stay overnight at the Derwent Bridge Chalet and Studios including breakfast.
